Quarto, first edition thus, pp. 94, 22 plates including title page; 120, 20 plates including title page, boards have perished, spine intact, all edges gilt, illustrations by James Smillie. Green-Wood was originally released in parts in 1846. Views of cemeteries in Boston and Brooklyn make for an unlikely gift book, but that is how they were marketed, according to Frank Weitenkampf (American Graphic Art, p. 81-82), "with good landscapes, drawn by James Smillie and in part engraved by him, in 'highly finished line engraving.' " Scarce; Worldcat lists only 7 copies in institutional libraries. Condition of this book: Good except for the lack of covers. First edition of the work in this format and binding, and/or set or series. Size: Quarto. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting.
