GILBERT ABBOTT A'BECKETT. The Comic History of England, 2 volumes in 1, London: Bradbury, Agnew & Co., undated (mid-1800s). Octavo, priority unknown here (either the 1863 or 1881 reissue), pp. xviii, 320; 304, rebound in maroon buckram with original backstrip laid down, all edges gilt, illustrated by John Leech, the Punch artist, with 20 hand-colored etchings and 200 woodcuts. History "in a homely shape," says the author. "The element of comedy in the book is provided exclusively by Leech's illustrations," says Gordon Ray in The Illustrator and the Book in England. Ray dates the first edition to 1847-48 (Ray 136). Also see Tooley 297. Condition of this book: Covers faded, overall very good. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
