Quarto, first edition, pp. 12, 188, blue morocco boards with gilt lettering and floral decoration to spine and covers, 13 illustrated plates including an illustrated title page, all edges gilt. Famous authors such as Irving, Bryant and Cooper contributed essays on American scenery, with illustration by equally famous artists including Cropsey, Durand, Kensett and others. Almost entirely devoted to the Northeast, with one venture into Kentucky (oddly, illustrated by a North Carolina scene). BAL 1648. Condition of this book: Wear at extremities with a chunk missing from the upper spine. Age toning at edges, offsetting from gravure illustration. Size: Quarto. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
