YONE NOGUCHI. The American Diary of a Japanese Girl, London, Tokio: Elkin Matthews/Fuzanbo, 1912. 12mo, early printing (first was 1902), pp. 239, 2 (reviews), wraps in trifolding case with bone clasps, three-panel color woodcut frontispiece by Yeiho Hiresaki. Author's first book -- fictional observations of a young Japanese woman visiting San Francisco with her uncle as chaperone. Noguchi was actually a man, the eventual father of the famous American sculptor Isamu Noguchi. He was living in New York by the time this book came out. American reviewers were completely unaware the author was male. Both early editions are very scarce; Worldcat locates only one, the 1912 edition, in Britain. Condition of this book: Wraps a bit soiled, inside shows occasional foxing. Slipcase discolored, worn at spine ends with losses to label. Size: 12mo. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Literature & Literary; United States; 1900-1920; Antiquarian & Rare.
