HANNAH MORE. Poems, London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1816. Octavo, first edition, pp. ix, 405, marbled boards half-bound in brown calf with gilt lettering to spine, all edges marbled, former owner's name on a flyleaf, bookseller ticket on rear pastedown. More, highly influential to later Victorian writers, was a conservative but "her deeply held orthodox faith often overcame her equal respect for authority" (Feminist Companion to Literature in English, pp. 760-61). She was extraordinarily successful as a dramatist and tract writer and is said to have been embarrassed by the fortune she made through her writing. These poems include ballads, tales, hymns and paeans to her heroes and heroines. Condition of this book: Near fine with wear at extremities, light foxing to preliminaries. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Poetry; England; 19th century; Antiquarian & Rare.
