Octavo, first edition, pp. ix, 405, marbled boards half-bound in brown calf with gilt lettering to spine, all edges marbled, former owner's name on a flyleaf, bookseller ticket on rear pastedown. More, highly influential to later Victorian writers, was a conservative but "her deeply held orthodox faith often overcame her equal respect for authority" (Feminist Companion to Literature in English, pp. 760-61). She was extraordinarily successful as a dramatist and tract writer and is said to have been embarrassed by the fortune she made through her writing. These poems include ballads, tales, hymns and paeans to her heroes and heroines. Condition of this book: Near fine with wear at extremities, light foxing to preliminaries.
