Octavo, early edition, pp. xii, 301, 1 (ad), illustrated boards, extensive illustration, gift inscription on a front blank. The author, a British Army officer in China and Japan, had extensive knowledge of the region and eventually set up as a Japanese art dealer in New York. He wrote numerous children's stories to supplement his income, but nevertheless failed financially, blowing his brains out at age 53, according to his obituary in The New York Times of Oct. 2, 1888. Condition of this book: Extremities rubbed, worn; overall very good and clean. Size: Octavo (standard book size).
