Quarto, priority unknown here, pp. 24 preceding 71 engraved plates, each with a facing page of commentary, brown cloth boards elaborately decorated with gilt and black stamping showing Pompeii life, all edges gilt, beveled edges. Gell (1777-1836) was an accomplished archaeologist in his era but gets no respect anymore, although his illustration is admired. This book is almost entirely devoted to his drawings and engravings of the architecture and art of Pompeii. Condition of this book: Very attractive presentation, sturdy, rear cover abraded, foxing throughout. Overall very good. Size: Quarto. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
