CHARLES DANA GIBSON. The Education of Mr. Pipp, New York: R.H. Russell, 1899. Oblong folio, unpaginated, printed boards half-bound in vellum, beveled edges, pen-and-ink illustration, no text. One of a series of thematic folios Gibson and Russell published around the turn of the 20th century, when Gibson was at the peak of his popularity. His young female characters, known collectively as The Gibson Girl, were an idealized version the American woman. Frank Weitenkampf in American Graphic Art says Gibson's work was more than a cliche: "Gibson broadened out, widened his outlook on humanity, which, with a smile, he presented in its failings and virtues, in continued performances such as 'The Education of Mr. Pipp' [Weitenkampf, p. 200]. Condition of this book: Covers darkened (as usual), dust smudges on endpages, overall very good. Size: Large Folio (bigger than A3). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
