WILLIAM ANDERSON. The Pictorial Arts of Japan, London: Sampson Low, undated (late 19th century). Massive folio, priority unknown, pp. xix, 1 (errata), 276, 80 plates with facing commentary, green leather boards quarter-bound in black leather with gilt lettering to spine, gilt and red lettering with a black stamped artwork on front, all edges gilt. Illustration in gravure and color. Includes "remarks upon ... the Chinese and Koreans." The author, who was attached to the British legation in Japan, wrote about the country's art at a time when the West was just starting to take an interest in it. This monumental volume was his great work in the field. Condition of this book: Covers rubbed at edges, dusty and flaking. Overall very sound, illustrations bright Size: Large Folio (bigger than A3). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
