ALVIN LANGDON COBURN and H.G. WELLS. The Door in the Wall and Other Stories, New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1911. Folio, edition of 600, pp. 153, 1 (note), beige-brown paper-covered boards, gilt-stamped, quarter-bound in beige cloth with paper label on spine, lacking original box, former owner's name on free front endpaper, 9 aquatone prints and 1 photogravure. The title page says the prints are photogravures but, as explained in Imagining Paradise (GEH, p. 233), when the gravure prints were shipped from England to the U.S., somebody drove a nail through half of them, so many of the American copies ended up with few or no gravures, instead getting something called aquatones, which resemble high-quality halftones. The present copy has but one gravure, and it's a good one -- The Embankment, one of Coburn's more important pictures. Coburn said of his work here: "I cycled all round the suburbs of London day after day in all sorts of weather before I found the place that corresponded with Mr. Wells' vivid description." Imagining Paradise also notes that the American edition was released four years before the English, although all 600 were printed in 1911. The Frederic Goudy type here was printed by his wife, Bertha. Also see Truthful Lens, No. 184. Condition of this book: Losses at spine ends, paper label shows wear, corners rubbed, small chip at bottom of front panel. Very clean and bright inside, with offsetting from the gravure print. Size: Large Folio (bigger than A3). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact.
