The author was an early feminist, reformist, and the mother of the better-known Victorian novelist Anthony Trollope. She wrote travel and fiction works, the present one being centered on a dominant female character. "Her sharp eye for detail and her satirical observation save even her most conventional fiction from mere romantic orthodoxy," says The Feminist Companion to Literature in English.
