Quarto, first edition, pp. viii, 215, 23 photo plates including frontispiece, green cloth boards with beveled edges and elaborate gilt and black stamped decoration and lettering to spine and front, all edges gilt, bookplate on front pastedown. Albumen prints, architectural, exteriors and interiors. This book is largely absent from the photographic literature but see Julia Van Haaften, NYPL Bull. 80, No. 3, 343. The eminent photo dealer Charles Wood, in his Catalog 158, p. 46, says Thompson "was a very prolific photographer, perhaps best known for the set of almost one thousand photographs of the British Museum collections which were published in the 1870s. ... He was a consummate professional photographer who made a living from his work." Condition of this book: Boards' edges worn, blemish in armorial on front panel. Blank leaf between frontis and title page is loose, one gather also loose, hinges in general are weak. Foxing throughout, photos show modest to almost no deterioration or fading. Size: Quarto. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
