Penn's first book and probably his most enthusiastically collected. Roth, p. 158: "Penn reinvented the classic daytime studio portrait for a more casual time, undercutting its formality but heightening its potential as a revealing performance." Also see Frizot's New History of Photography, p. 550: "The apparent simplicity of Irving Penn's compositions conceals a formal complexity. It is the result of the particular elegance of the model's outline, of the abstract interplay of lines and shapes, of empty and filled space."
