TUCKERMAN, HENRY T. Book of the Artists, American Artist Life, New York: Putnam, 1867. Quarto, large-paper edition, pp. xi, 7-639, black buckram boards with green lettering to spine, a rebinding with numerous extra illustrations bound in, as well as three holograph letters by the author, and a note from a former owner. The letters are: 1. A one-page exhortation in verse (Tuckerman liked to write in verse) to Col. Frank Howe, a Union Army figure of some importance behind the lines, just after the outbreak of the Civil War. 2. A 2-page (one leaf) letter to Gen. Adam Badeau, an aide to Ulysses Grant on the battlefield and in the White House, with personal comments and remarks on Badeau's work in progress -- a massive book about Grant. Dated 1870, not reproduced here. 3. A 4-line verse dated 1864 -- it may have been part of a letter or merely something Tuckerman wrote for himself. Howes, T-401, says 50 large-paper copies were released in addition to a trade edition. It is unclear how may of the illustrations here were original, and how many were added later. There are about 25 in all; a few were simply laid in. All are engravings except for one albumen photo print, of Charles Robert Leslie. Tuckerman profiles major and minor American artists and is still considered an important scholarly reference. See Arntzen & Rainwater, E-178. Also see BAL 20704, which notes that this edition is an enlarged and revised edition of Tuckerman's 1847 book Artist-Life: Or Sketches of American Painters. The present copy is very clean and tight, with a few marks to the boards. Special Limited Edition, first issue in this format. Size: Quarto. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
