Quarto, early edition (first was 1898), pp. [iv], 228, 5 (ads), olive cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine, black and red lettering in white box on upper panel, which also shows a landscape with a castle and green, black, gilt and red details, frontis, title page and 6 plates illustrated by Maxfield Parrish, with illustrations in text. Top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. A very appealing copy of this children's classic and Parrish high spot. Condition of this book: Boards lightly worn at edges, white box on upper panel is chipped, gilt on upper panel dulled in spots. Leaves clean and tight, images fine, but even though they are protected under tissue guards, there is minor image transfer to the facing pages of text. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
