Longman, Hurst, 1823, Hardcover (Half Leather), Book Condition: Good, Dust Jacket Condition: No, First
BAKEWELL, R. Travels Comprising Observations Made During a Residence in the Tarentaise ..., in 2 volumes, London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1823. Octavo, first editions, pp. 8 (ads), xvi, 381, 3 hand-colored aquatints; vii, 447, 1 color plate (frontispiece), contemporary three-quarter maroon calf over maroon cloth, gilt lettering inside 4 of 5 spine compartments, rehinged with added endpages to repair cracked joints, edges untrimmed. Provenance: from the collection of the mountaineer Vernon Howard, with his bookplates on the front pastedowns; title pages have inadequately erased notes identifying the books as from the library of the Governor's Company (a bank in Ireland). Written as a report on geology but also to entertain English readers who, the author says, rarely if ever visit the parts of Europe covered here. In addition to the Tarentaise, the title mentions the Grecian and Pennine Alps, Switzerland and Auvergne. See Abbey Travel 56 and Tooley 75. Tooley paginates the 4 color plates differently from those in the present set, but all are intact here. Condition of these books: Good and sound with scattered dusty stains as if from fingerprints, but generally clean, very little foxing. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 2-volume set (complete). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 2-3 kilos. Category: Exploration; 19th century; Antiquarian & Rare. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 53307.
