Large, square quarto, first FSG edition of work that was released in 1947, pp. [vii], 180, brown leatherette boards with gilt lettering on spine, blind-stamped signature on upper panel, glossy halftone photos. 1930s photos of the Jewish enclaves in Central and Eastern Europe just before their destruction by the Nazis. This title was released in 1947 by the Forward Association in expanded form using about 500 pictures from others besides Vishniac. The present volume includes only Vishniac's work, with a foreword from Elie Wiesel. See Roosens-Salu 10809. Condition of this book: Boards lightly worn with discoloration at edges, jacket worn with a bump at tail of spine. Leaves clean and tight, wavy at edges, images fine. Size: Quarto. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
