Quarto, pp. xxxii, 307, 11 heliotype plates, 2 folding maps but lacking the atlas folio, original brown cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. The plates are not in numerical order. Dutton, an associate of John Wesley Powell, was one of the leading geologists of his era, and energetic in the field, covering 12,000 square miles with his Utah study. Wikipedia: "Dutton had a distinctive flair for literary description, and is best remembered today for his colorful (and sometimes flamboyant) descriptions. ... Condition of this book: Boards worn, backstrip held in place only by tape. Leaves clean but plates dampstained at edges. Size: Quarto.
