Octavo, one of at least 3 1866 editions, pp. 512, frontis engraving and 15 other engraved plates, original brown cloth boards with gilt-stamped title and decoration on spine and upper board. Dornbush, V.3, 408-409 covers two other 1866 editions out of Philadelphia, with the two titles reversed from this one. All have the same text, with some variation in images presented. The focus is individual derring-do, often covert, by spies, scouts, detectives and other shadowy figures. Condition of this book: Boards rubbed, worn, faded, with a small puncture in the lower right that goes through the margins of about 70 pages, but with no effect to content. Leaves stained at edges, with various other marks, but overall good, no hinge cracks. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
