GRAPPE, GEORGES. Constantin Guys, New York/Paris: Brentano's, n.d. Folio, pp. 59, marbled boards half-bound in black buckram, black-and-white art reproductions, with a 4-page folio tipped in, entitled "Constantin Guys et le Grace du Second Empire," with sepia tinted illustration and French text. Guys' work is considered a forerunner to impressionism. In addition to being a leading artist, he was a Crimean War reporter for British and French newspapers. The present volume contains a good sample of his Crimean watercolors, plus the kind of work that got him labeled "the painter of modern life": pictures of fancy horse carriages, fashionable women, and working ladies. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
