Folio, pp. 59, marbled boards half-bound in black buckram, black-and-white art reproductions, with a 4-page folio tipped in, entitled "Constantin Guys et le Grace du Second Empire," with sepia tinted illustration and French text. Guys' work is considered a forerunner to impressionism. In addition to being a leading artist, he was a Crimean War reporter for British and French newspapers. The present volume contains a good sample of his Crimean watercolors, plus the kind of work that got him labeled "the painter of modern life": pictures of fancy horse carriages, fashionable women, and working ladies. Condition of this book: Boards moderately worn at extremities. Leaves clean and tight, age toned, spotted at edges. Size: Large Folio (bigger than A3). 59.
