BIDAUT, JAYNE HINDS. Tintypes, No. 45 of an edition of 100, quarto, Graphis, 1999, pp. 224, red cloth boards in a black cloth-covered wooden clamshell box, essay by Eugenia Parry, with a dedication by the artist and an original tintype of a butterfly (2.5x3.5 inches) signed by the artist. Fine in scuffed clamshell. A mostly forgotten phenomenon, the tintype is a thin piece of sheet iron enameled black or brown-black with a collodion coating to hold an image. It was the first photographic process that was widely available to anybody, with itinerant practitioners of the art selling their work for little money. The tintype brought the first instances of people mugging and generally making fools of themselves in front of a camera, so it is interesting to come upon a serious artist working in this medium In her explanatory essay, Parry takes us through the thinking that brought Bidaut to the tintype as her means of expression. Modern chemistries wouldnt do. ... She chose ferrotype (also called tintype) in which The Dark - felt beautiful-, for the dusky shadings of the process impart to everything captured the aura of perpetual twilight. ... Returning to ferrotype, photographically retrograde, was also an act of deliberate preservation against the strange disease of modern life.
