Pelican A965."In the heat of the great debate over grammar and comprehensive schools we are in danger of discounting the immediate future of two thirds of British schoolchildren - those who attend the local secondary modern, This book is a school report with several differences. John Partridge taught at a new and well-equipped Midlands secondary modern school and discovered that authoritarianism and corporal punishment permeated its whole structure. He found that 'streaming' continued long after the eleven-plus, even though it was unsuitable, inaccurate and manifestly unfair in operation. The watered-down academic education provided had no relevance to pupils' future lives and occupations. The school seemed to justify its existence only by repeatedly ramming home its pupils' inadequacies: boys in low streams often became school odd-job men, and others in no way subnormal drifted out of school unable to read or write. Yet the school was the pride of the local authority. If it is typical - and there is evidence that it is - this account has alarming implications for our whole educational system." 203 pages.
