white titles front & spine; "As no strictly historical records are in our possession, on which a systematic reconstruction of Jesus' trial and crucifixion could be based, the author has sought to examine and analyse in turn the several issues involved in the accounts of the canonical Gospels. Among the matters discussed are: the division of Roman and Jewish jurisdiction in Judaea; the Roman and Jewish modes of inflicting capital punishment; the official meeting-place of the Sanhedrin in relation to the report of a night-session in the highpriest's residence; Pilate as a historical person and as a figure in Christian tradition; the identity of the highpriest believed to have held office at the time of Jesus' trial; the Barabbas episode; the enemies of Jesus, and other relevant topics. In each of these specific enquiries, the author analyses the emergence of the Gospel records, and discovers four main stages in the process of their development, namely: (1) the actual historical event; (2) the primary report of the event and· its interpretation in primitive preaching; (3) secondary traditions - variants of the primary report - which evolved collaterally prior to the composition of the Gospels; (4) the coalescence of primary and secondary traditions and their adaptation at the hands of individual writers, eventually resulting in the literary construction presented in the Gospels. In this way the author attempts to put the separation of theological interpretation from historical fact on an objective basis.".
