black titles spine; illustrated by b/w. photo's. & drawings; cover design by Peter Chadwick iincorporating a portrait of Chaucer from MS Harley 4866. courtesy of the British Museum; the second half of the fourteenth century started under the shadow of the Black Death and moved sombrely on through the spoliations of the Hundred Years War, the senility of Edward Ill, a notable earthquake, the persecution of an early Protestantism, and the upheavals of the Peasants' Revolt, to the murder of Richard II and the usurpation of Henry IV. But something wonderfully enduring occurred, too: the emergence of the English language and its literature from their long domination by Norman French. The period coincides with the lifetime of Chaucer, and when he died in 1400 the safety and the shape of the language were established beyond-doubt. The endeavour of this book is to let the writers of various "schools", and some wayward geniuses, interpret their age for us in their own words; and though every quotation is at once translated in a close yet readable style, help is given at the beginning so that the original music of the poetry can be read aloud and heard. It was a brilliant age, in literature as in architecture, but for the historian of ideas the English language was relatively silent and Latin the vehicle; thus there will be disappointing gaps in the record, and some obtuseness in observation, but the combination of great English writers with vast events makes 1350-1400 the obvious starting-point for this series."; previous owner's name inside front cover; a sound copy with only slight edge-wear; including index - 318 pages. including index - pages.
