gilt titles spine with gilt crest front; signed by the author on the front endpaper with the (slightly confusing) inscription: "For Irmgard Kapuer Who wrote every word of this book - Leonard Forster"; "this book does not claim to be a full treatment of the intellectual life of Dutch exiles in Elizabethan England. It is concerned with Dutch poetry--of a certain kind and with the continuity of Dutch literature in the sixteenth century. It arose out of the attempt to pursue certain related problems in German literature which proved difficult to solve until this particular matter had been dealt with. I have therefore not tried to do more than establish my main point; I must leave a full treatment to those specially concerned with Anglo-Dutch cultural relations and with the history and antiquities of Norfolk. and Norwich. I am very conscious of how much I have left undone. The immediate impulse came from discussions with Dr. J. A. van Dorsten, who first drew my attention to Gruter's poems in the vernacular, which turned out to be important in the German context. The next question was: given Gruter's antecedents, how did he come to write them? The resulting study of the literary life of Dutch exile communities in England is concentrated on this problem; I have grouped everything round Gruter."; including appendices, bibliography & index - 167 pages.
