He knew the American habit well enough to expect that it would require collapse of the economic boom before voters would listen to reform. He also foresaw the danger to the United States of a second world war before the isolationist majority in Congress and the country would believe it. He begged Congress for various measures of cooperation with peaceful nations against the rising aggressions of the Axis leaders in time to try to prevent the Second World War, but he got them only in time to help win it. He went so far as to sacrifice the prlnciple of anti-imperialism as a concession to Russia at the Yalta Conference not only to make sure of winning the War but also to secure forehanded measures to prevent a third world war, and he has been bitterly criticized for sacrificing too much, The disasters he had to deal with were second in gravity throughout our history only to the one Lincoln faced, The people twice gave him unified support for a few months to help him surmount the domestic crisis of 1933 and the Axis attack of 1941. During the rest of his twelve years in the White House he faced hatred which was also second only to that of Lincoln.
