black titles spine; "when 2000 was nominated 'Year of Public Sculpture', Richard Barnes looked at Norfolk and the city of Norwich. Spotlighting individual sculptures and monuments, his descriptions appeared in The Eastern Daily Press. Gathered together in this little reference book, the features pass from a 19th century pillar to a sensitive memorial, from a stone figure in a niche to a kinetic structure. Sculptures are shown in colour pictures taken by EDP photographers and the author, side by side with written accounts, full of information and some original research. These touch many aspects of Norfolk's history, with tales of men and women in peace and war, recalling local events and battles in distant fields. Statues commemorate Tom Paine, Nelson, Vancouver, Coke of Norfolk, Maharajah Duleep Singh, the philosopher Thomas Browne, coxwain Blogg and many others. Connected by location, the sculptures begin to resemble a collection, with examples of Edwardian 'New' sculpture, Victorian Renaissance and Georgian Classicism. Documented for the first time, the list is impressive if not entire, though it takes in nearly all the larger monuments and some lesser known pieces, including works by Peter Scheemakers, F.Derwent Wood, John Flaxman and G.F. Watts. Here also are expressionistic modern works by Barbara Hepworth, Uliane Lijn, Bernard Meadows and Henry Moore. 'Year of Public Sculpture - Norfolk' is a timely publication, intended for the people of Norfolk and sculpture devotees in other regions."; including index - 48 pages.
