black titles spine & front; a National Gallery catalogue which deals with the pictures of the Earlier Italian Schools in the National Gallery. It records also a few miscellaneous items, such as Greco-Roman portraits; but its main subject is the Italian pictures up to the end of the Early Renaissance. There is no doubt that a broad line of demarcation can be drawn between the Early and the High Renaissance. In some cases, nevertheless, it has been difficult to decide what to put into this catalogue and what to leave out. It appears, for instance, reasonable to class Perugino in the Early Renaissance, and Raphael in the High Renaissance; yet, in point of fact, Perugino died later than Raphael, and one of the Peruginos here catalogued was most probably painted after Raphael's death. Clearly, no division can be made that would in every detail be accepted by everyone as correct. Two lists are given at the end of the present volume, to help the student to find out what is included: a list of the inventory numbers of the pictures, and a list of the attributions that have been changed since the catalogue of 1929 and its supplement of 1939. light wear to spine edges & to corners; including indexes - 623 pages.
