patterned end-papers; introduction & contents to front; 4-pages at rear on Everyman Library by Ernest Rhys (editor of the series); The Ordeal of Richard Feverel was written by Meredith in 1859, when he was thirty-one years old. Following the Oriental fantasy, The Shaving of Shagpat, and the gothic grotesque Fariina, a Legend of Cologne, it was thus his third essay in prose-fiction. But it was also his first 'novel' in the Meredithian sense of the word. It marked the beginning of that rich maturity of a personality which found its fullest expression in The Egoist. Richard Feverel thus appears in Everyman's Library because it represents Meredith, the mature artist, at his most approachable period, recognizable at once, yet still not too idiosyncratic. Many readers, and many critics, think this is his finest book. Others believe that what he calls 'the comedic spirit' is not yet sufficiently released in this first serious attempt at a criticism of civilization. But whatever the controversy on this matter may ultimately decide, one fact remains: Richard Feverel is the most popular and the most immediately appealing of his novels.
