Introduction by A. J. Hoppe which includes a biography of Conrad & a bibliography of his works; This 'omnibus' volume contains three of the best known of Conrad's stories of the sea and ships. The story of The Nigger of the' Narcissus' was drawn from life; out of experienced fact Conrad made a work of art. Typhoon does for a steamship in furious storm what The Nigger does for a sailing ship. The Shadow Line, in contrast to storms, tells of a death-haunted ship 'drifting in calms and swinging in light airs.' When he died in 1924 Conrad's place among living authors was second only to Thomas Hardy's, and today he is firmly established among the greatest of modern story tellers. Born a Pole, not reaching the sea until he was sixteen, and not knowing a word of English until he was nineteen, his work has a unique quality, both in vision and expression.
