This edition by the noted Sinologist James Legge [1815-1897] is generally considered the best in English. It contains a complete translation, exhaustive footnotes explaining allusions, and a reproduction of the Chinese text & is an unaltered republication of the work first published by the Clarendon Press, Oxford in 1886. Fa-Hien was a Chinese Buddhist monk and translator who traveled by foot from Ancient China to Ancient India, visiting many sacred Buddhist sites in Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia between 399-412 to acquire Buddhist texts.
