A newspaper of any kind cannot be relied upon to give a complete picture of life in a particular period and the Cambridge Chronicle was no exception. The ordinary, and much of the pleasanter side of life, of course, did not reach the paper and over the years the Waterbeach correspondents, the real authors of this book, reported a great amount of hardship and tragedy. There is no doubt that life during this period was pleasant for a few but for the majority times were hard in the extreme. For hours of work which occupied almost very daylight hour the labourer received a wage which was barely sufficient to provide bread for his family - let alone fuel and clothing. Unemployment was frequent and the dole unknown. Illness of any kind was a frightening' prospect and, if charity was not available, the end to a hard working life was the workhouse. This book has been produced primarily for the interest of those with Waterbeach connections but it will have a far wider appeal. The conditions which existed here in the 18th and 19th centuries were common in other villages throughout the county and some were national problems. Loosely inserted is a newspaper cutting obituary of Denis Cheason. Size: Oblong 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. unpaginated.
