Everyman's Library No's. 861 & 862; blind-stamped publisher's device to front cover; illustrated 'everyman' end-papers; translated by Constance Garnett; with Introduction by J. Middleton Murry; a novel first published in the journal 'The Russian Messenger' in 1871–2. It is considered one of the four masterworks written by Dostoevsky after his return from Siberian exile. It is an allegory of the potentially catastrophic consequences of the political and moral nihilism that were becoming prevalent in Russia in the 1860's. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 316 & 309 pages. 2-volume set (complete). Bindings are tight, covers and spines fully intact.
