A handsome set bound in half-leather with marbled boards; five raised bands with gilt decoration(worn) to spines with gilt titles to red panels; The standard county history though never completed, covering only the Hundreds of Wangford, Mutford, Lothingland & Blything. Suckling fell out with his publisher and issued the second volume himself by subscription. The remaining copies of vol.1 seem therefore to have been destroyed by Weale, leaving a surplus of vol.II which is thus often found alone. Suckling was born on 31 January 1796 in Norwich. He was educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he matriculated in May 1814. He was ordained at Norwich on 15 October 1820 & on 10 July 1839 he was instituted on his own petition to the rectory of Barsham in Suffolk, which he held until his death. Size: 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. 383 & 460 pages. 2-volume set (complete). Bindings are tight, covers and spines fully intact. Scattered foxing, especially to outer borders of the plates, but text mostly clean. Marbled edges in good condition. light wear to spines & edges with rubbing scuffs to covers in places. 143 illustrations (66 vol.1 & 77 vol. 2) including b/w. drawings in the text, many lithograph plates ( some coloured) & a large folding genealogy;.
