Sioux people were first seen by Europeans in the 17th century while camped near Mille Lacs, Minnesota. Through early years of contact with Europeans and Americans, Sioux tribes were active in the fur trade, helpful to explorers and missionaries, and influential in dealing with federal officials. Bearing firearms on horseback, they excelled in hunting and inspired awe when defending their territory against intruders. By the 1850s they were a match for the U. S. Army. The Yanktons were the only Sioux who refused to take up arms against the United States, but in every other way their history represents the experiences of all Sioux people. The 14 tribes in this great federation have been instrumental in the development of federal Indian policies; featured in American literature and art; visible in the entertainment media; and prominent in the image of American Indians around the world.
