Edited by Bernard H. Newdigate; No. 7 in the Shakespeare Head Quartos Series; pre-title page printed in red & black; Not even in Shakespeare are there many passages of pure poetry that surpass in beauty his Dirge to the Phoenix and Turtle. But when the Anthem with its Threnos is read from an anthology or from any edition of his collected works, it is necessarily torn from its setting amongst the Poeticall Essaies which he and his fellow poets contributed to Loves Martyr. If we seek to interpret them rightly, we must study them along with the other poems for which they were written. The other Poeticall Essaies, too, make their own several claims upon the student of English poetry. In the Epode we have Jonson at his sternest and strongest. 'The Poeticall Essaies are printed here from the copy of Loves Martyr at the British Museum, the only one which remains in this country. Loves Martyr itself is much too long to include in this little book; but the summary of it given in the Introduction will, it is hoped, be enough to indicate how the Essaies bear upon Chester's allegory and are in part explained by it.
