A volume (BE12) in Pevsner's 'The Buildings of England' series; several b/w. maps of the area covered at front; The City of London is here taken to include the Tower of London, which is administratively in the borough of Stepney; the City of Westminster to include the strip of Chelsea E of Sloane Street. On the other hand, from the City of Westminster are excluded part of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. The latter, with the Albert Memorial, Albert Hall, Imperial Institute etc., are dealt with in Volume Two. As for South Holborn, this stands for everything S of (and including) New Oxford Street, High Holborn, and Holborn Viaduct. So much for boundaries. Now how can one deal with the very large number of entries and descriptions within these boundaries? The usual arrangement in The Buildings of England is: Introduction, Churches, Public Buildings, Perambulations. In Volume Two it was easy to follow this system; for the County of London has twenty-seven boroughs; so the arrangement could be repeated twenty-seven times. But the material to go into the present volume could not be subdivided as finely as that. It falls in fact into no more than three natural divisions, and I have retained them: I. The City of London from its eastern boundary to (and excluding) Farringdon Street, Ludgate Circus, and New Bridge Street. II. South Holborn and the Strand and Fleet Street area, from Farringdon Street, Ludgate Circus, and New Bridge Street westward to (and including) Charing Cross Road, Trafalgar Square, and Northumberland Avenue. Ill. The City of Westminster W of (and excluding) Charing Cross Road, Trafalgar Square, and Northumberland Avenue. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 631 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. wear to top ede with small piece missing from outer corner. Dust Jacket un-clipped.
