yellow end-papers; a fascinating work on this now defunct industry with 411 pages of text covering: 'History of the Introduction of Lighting by Coal-Gas'; 'Chemistry in the Manufacture of Coal- Gas'; its 'Generation' 'Carburation' & 'Analysis'; 'Coal': (Collieries in the U.K./types of coal/experiments on cola products); 'Advantages of Gas'; 'Retorts'; 'Condensers'; 'Exhausters'; 'Purification'; Tanks & Gas Holders'; 'Valves'; 'Mains & Distribution'; 'Fittings'; 'Meters'; 'Burners' & 'Gas-Works' with many 'in text' woodcuts & illustrations; followed by 33 b/w. plates of larger illustrations, most over 2 pages & many fold-out; with, at the rear of the book 32 pages of contemporary & mainly illustrated advertisements for gas-related products. This later edition has been revised & enlarged by about a third over previous editions with the plates & woodcuts nearly doubled. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 411 + 33 + 32 pages. a few marks (ink spots) to covers. Spine working loose but still intact. Heavy foxing front/rear pages, but body of book mostly clean and unfoxed. laid in to the front end-paper is a receipt dated 14th July, 1866 from the "Office of the Journal of Gas Lighting, Water Supply & Sanitary Improvement" of Fleet Street, London for the sum of fifteen shillings & sixpence made out to Mr. Robt. Cawley of Oldham in respect of his subscription to this treatise.. Top edge brown. Gilt titles spine. extreme wear to corners with splitting along the length of both sides of the spine plus wear to its top edge, however the contents are complete & in good condition other than a faint damp stain on the bottom edge of the plates & a few other pages.. pebbled cloth covers with extensive blind-stamped decorated border patterns.
