During the years 1827-9 Mundy made a journey of some 650 miles from Calcutta to the Upper Provinces of India during which he kept a manuscript journal, for his own amusement, detailing scenes & characters as they appeared, incidents as they occurred, and anecdotes as they were related to him. On returning to England he was persuaded to have these published in the present volumes which were illustrated by engravings which he selected being : "for the most part those bearing on Indian sporting , as presenting more of a novelty to the English eye than the more hackneyed subjects of landscape."
