six famous architects - Andrea Palladio; Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini; Inigo Jones; François Mansart; Ange Jacques Gabriel; and Sir Christopher Wren. This volume contains the substance of Lectures delivered at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, on the Aberystwyth Lectures Foundation during the Session 1934-35. In them no attempt has been made to give an exhaustive account of the subjects of the study, especially as in the case of two at least of them, Inigo Jones and Francois Mansart, the actual materials are very scanty & also the subject is not approached from a technical point of view. The author's aim has been, so far as possible, to disentangle the personality of each of these famous Architects, and to present some idea of the sort of men they actually were, so far as one can form any opinion from their work and the records that exist. The art of Architecture is as personal and intimate as that of the Painter and Sculptor, a fact that is too often lost sight of in the zeal for classification of the Art by styles and periods, and it is to this human side that the author has addressed himself.
