Srawberry Fare is the product of its author's imagination working freely on memories of boyhood and youth in a SuffolkNorfolk border village. Woven around the central character - a fictional hybrid bred from the genes of a flush of well remembered real-life worthies - are a series of tales in the oral tradition, helped in the telling by a generous splattering of dialect. Some of these tales are simple, artless almost to the point of naivety, yet all are strikingly descriptive of the tenor and way of life in 'that winsome border country where North Suffolk nudges South Norfolk, separated by the Waveney's straggle' before television, the universal motor car and the welfare state combined to change the countryman's life-style and rob him of much of his ingenuity. 'Strawberry', says the author at the very beginning 'was a character.' He goes on to demonstrate why in a succession of rollicking stories in which are sketched other 'character' portraits, conveying (as the foreword says) 'in outline the sturdy independence and rugged wit they all possessed and in colouring the great fun they had.' The book is completed by a couple of haunting short stories, the themes of which are more worldly than the 'doins' of Strawberry.
