Spike Mays and Chris Ketteridge tell the story of the Essex village of Ashdon in the early part of this century. Chris and his brothers entered the building trade as boys, and in the chapter 'Of clay and wattles made' he describes building methods from the making of pug bricks to a fully finished timber and plaster cottage, pargeted with local mortar and thatched with combed straw. We learn too how the old post mill was made, and watch the miller working in it. Blacksmith, wheelwright, clerks in orders, and the squire all figured too in the authors' daily lives: the woods in season teemed with small animals and birds. poachers and shooting men; while Granny and Reuben Ford baked home-made bread and made ale and wine from old country recipes.
