This is the tale of one man's fight for survival. A huge expedition ship has been travelling through space for 65 years, seeking planets for colonisation. Just as it is going into orbit, an atomic explosion partly destroys it, leaving intact only one manned scout craft which Tansis, a trained space pilot, manages to land safely. The planet does not appear to be hostile but seems to have no means for human sustenance. It is mostly covered by a ribbon-like plant, the only life is in the seas and the highest form appears to be large seal-like creatures with whom Tansis, hungering for companionship, tries to establish intelligent contact. When the scout craft's computer warns Tansis that the energy supply is fast running out, he is forced to take his position really seriously and to make immediate plans for survival. The author has that rare capacity of making the reader suspend disbelief so that he becomes deeply involved with the shipwrecked survivor however alien the circumstances.
