Bradbury and Evans, 1860, Hardcover, Book Condition: Fair, Dust Jacket Condition: No
An early combined edition of all five series in full leather decorated boards. Chock full of superbly rendered comic scenes of 19th century English life, well upper class life mostly. There are problems however - the boards are very worn at the edges, tearing to the top of the spine. An ex-libris plate of a prior owner adorns the marbled endpaper. Nicely designed plate though. Numerous pages missing or damaged/ripped possibly 5\% . The first 14 pages have been ripped out, a lot of the first series has ripped and missing pieces. After that we are reduced to smaller page tears. Toward the end of the fifth series, tearing and ripping increases a bit - the series ends at page 90, the index to series five and presumably a few more pages are missing - the endpapers survive in good order. There is a general mustiness to the book, definite evidence of damp damage and a fair amount of spotting and brown markings throughout. Enough said the vast majority of cartoons are in good order, pretty clean and perfectly legible. Oh it's gilt edged too. Will be expensive to post out of Australia. Size: Oblong 4to 11" - 13" tal.
