During the 1980 cricket season, Ben Travers broadcast a radio interview which aroused universal interest. Cricket lovers, old and young, were fascinated to hear the vivid recollections of one who had watched WG Grace make a century and seen Jessop's historic innings at the Oval in 1902. The encouragement he received to publish these impressions provided him with the incentive for this book. Later in life Travers accompanied the great English 1928-9 team on their visit to Australia and he became closely associated with many of the most eminent cricketers of both countries during that vintage period.
