This book was written by a lecturer at Sydney University of Old Testament Language and Literature and found that he and his students did not have a source of information on the Jewish settlement of Palestine between the sixth and 10th century B. C. and they needed a "... concordance of ideas, without to comment. The sources said the sort of study are threefold: first of all the relevant parts of the Old Testament, and then, of far inferior value, archaeological evidence such as it is, and allusions in the records of other peoples. The relevant parts of the Old Testament the historical books -- Judges, I and II Samuel, and I and II Kings Bass since a loan deal with the conditions in Palestine after the settlement." -- from the preface page V.
