The text is illustrated with numerous colour and black-and-white drawings, engravings, sketches and paintings of Australian natural history from the earliest examples, from the voyage of William Dampier in 1829. Bottle green textured coloured boards with gilt titles. A little rubbing to the book corners and to the backstrip edges. Bumping to the lower backstrip edge. Light browning to the text block edge. Illustrated dustwrapper, showing a very early painting of a Black Swan, with a peach coloured background with orange and black titles to the front panel and backstrip. Rubbing to the dustwrapper edges. There is a 0.25 " tear to the lower right-hand corner of the front dustwrapper panel. Rubbing and marking to the dustwrapper panels and fading to the backstrip area. The history of the cataloguing, and in some cases collecting, of Australia's natural wealth, from the earliest reporting is from Dampier up to 1829. In a lot of cases the flora and fauna of Australia defied the scientific dogma of the day and consequently challenged both the imagination and descriptive powers of its discoverers and cataloguers.
