Black-and-white illustrated frontispiece, not credited, showing a man struggling with a young child on a roof. There is also a small black-and-white illustration of a young child holding a lamp on the title page. At the beginning of each chapter the first letter starting the chapter has been decorated with a flower motif. Illustrated front cover which is quite ornate. At the top one third of the front panel is an illustration of a dark brown ship with gilt, green and brown waves and writing in red and blue. Below the ship is an illustration of three boys, 2 playing cricket and 1 watching, the boys have been rendered in gilt. The background illustration shows a field with trees and fence with the background in dark green. On the back strip there is an illustration of a ship in gilt and a gilt insert with dark green writing. There has been bumping, rubbing and slight fraying to the head and to the heel of the back strip and book corners. Shelf wear both bottom of book edges. The panels of the book have become slightly rubbed a little faded and there are a few marks as well. Browning and foxing to the text block edges. Browning and slight foxing to the endpapers and previous owners have placed their names upon the free front endpaper. A few handling marks are also present. The internal pages are slightly brown and a few handling marks also present. The front and back hinges have started to split. The text internally has started to split, though no pages are missing and binding is tight. A novel from the early part of the 20th century aimed [ I think ] at boys. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
