" Professor Hessen's essay, ' The Social and Economic Roots of Newton's ' Principia ' ', was one of the contributors of the Soviet delegation to the International Congress on the history of science held in London in 1931. For the majority of scientists, it was their first introduction to the method of Historical materialism, the method of Marx and Engels, which seeks the origins of historical development in the objective material conditions prevailing in society. It was, in fact, the first attempt to apply the method in detail to the work of an individual scientist, and to show that the natural scientists, as well as the social scientist and philosopher, was a product of his particular social epoch.".
