The text is illustrated with 95 plates, four of which are tipped in coloured illustrations and the rest are in black and white. Black coloured boards with white writing on the front panel and spine. A book about the English portraitist Augustus John. Part of the English Artist series edited by John Rothenstein. Bumping and rubbing to the head and to the heel of the spine and to the lower book corners. The spine has become rubbed and faded and the lower spine edge is a little frayed. Shelfwear and rubbing to the lower book edges and a little wear to the top book edges. The cloth of the board has become somewhat marked and rubbed. The edges of the book are also somewhat rubbed. Browning and foxing to the end papers though the internal pages are free of foxing. Original bookseller's sticker to the lower right-hand corner of the front paste down. This is the first UK edition.
